Tension after indefinite closure in Darjeeling

The indefinite closing of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) convened for the sixth day is going on Saturday. This has created tension in the hill areas of North West Bengal. The turmoil between the state's ruling Trinamool Congress and the GJM is causing unrest in Darjeeling's proceedings.

GJM's assistant general secretary Binay Tamang claimed that the police and Trinamool Congress workers had raided and subdued in their house at around 3 pm on Friday night, just like 2 days ago they had at the house of party chief Bimal Gurung. Tamang also claimed that the police has also arrested the son of GJM legislator Amar Rai. Amar Rai says that his son has nothing to do with politics.

Tamang said in a statement, "We are shocked that last night a local journalist Vikram Rai was arrested. Rai is associated with several media institutions in Kolkata He has also worked as a stringer for a television channel. If the local journalists are not safe in Darjeeling, then who can be. ' He said, "A virtual emergency has been implemented in Darjeeling."

At the same time, Trinamool Congress activist Devraj Gurang claimed that GJM supporters pelted stones at their residence on Lebong Kart Road and threw petrol bombs. GJM supporters allegedly attacked the residence of a local Trinamool worker in Pankhbadi and set fire to the PWD office in Bijonbadi. The ongoing violence in Darjeeling has also had a bad effect on tourism.

According to a railway official, the Toy Train service of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) has also been postponed due to the safety of passengers and employees. GJM has announced an indefinite strike in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts in hill areas in protest against chief minister Mamata Banerjee's decision to make Bengali language compulsory in government schools. However, the Chief Minister has assured that the new rule will not be implemented in hilly districts. After this the strike has been called.
