How to quit a job?

The very heading of the piece may startle readers, esp. young readers. But the fact is, nowadays quitting a job is as crucial as joining a new one. Quitting a job encompasses a gamut of emotions and careful decisions. 

Daniel Hasset of HP says that 'Today, we all have two parallel plans regarding Joining and quitting jobs. Quitting is even more important and decisive than joining.'


So very true. Job-quitting needs a premeditated and careful planning. Well, if you're fired from the job or leave in a huff, this careful planning doesn't come into picture. But there're certain do's and don'ts that remain in any situation, whether you carefully leave, fired or quit in a huff.


When one's in a rather advantageous position as to have time at his/her disposal to quit the job, one should ponder over these aspects that are integral to one's career:


1. Whether you've a back up or contingency plan


This is very important. Getting a job afresh is an uphill task. So if you're contemplating to quit your present job, be ready with a back up plan. It'll be advisable that you find an alternative job and then leave your present one.


2. If you're coolly quitting, then be good and friendly with your employers

World is small and the job world is even smaller. You can bump into your ex boss like your ex-flame and at that time, you mustn't be embarrassed. So leave the present organization with a pleasant smile and a kind of goodwill that you may require them and vice versa at some point of time. Remember the Scottish adage, Don't ever slam a door, you might want to go back.


3. See to it that the alternative job has all that you've in the present job. Still better, if you're offered more perks. But in any case, your back up job shouldn't be very humdrum. Then you'll be full of despair. It's like love on the rebound, which invariably fails and leaves you disillusioned. The thumb rule is: The contingent or stop-gap job must immediately appeal to your job instincts. In other words, the offer should be spontaneous.


4. Don't discuss this with anyone in the present organization that you're planning to quit the job. Even if you tell someone beforehand, at least refrain from telling where you're going after quitting the present company/organization.


5. Take decision in a cool and composed manner and only after discussing that with your true well-wishers, who're not part of the same organization.


6. Tender your resignation in a dignified manner


7. State the reason of quitting in a succinct way. Here, you need to be very precise


8. Never be frivolous in your approach while quitting a job. Remember once again that the world is small and the job-world is even smaller.


And if you're not in a position to take all these things into account in case of getting fired or leaving in a huff, then rest a while at home for a few days. 


Let the shock sink in. Then only will you be able to think clearly. Once you're back into the groove, start mailing your resume and use your networking. Finding and quitting both are parts of life. There's nothing so serious if one loses one's job. This happens. Change is a must. Though change is painful/Yet ever needful. Nothing is permanent. Philosophise the situation and take it positively. Try to learn and imbibe lessons from the earlier (unpleasant) job experience/s. This helps. Be practical and don's panic. Losing a job is not traumatic. And it ought not to be for anyone. 



You'll soon get a job better than the earlier one.
